The Saturday dedicated to Fitness

25 Jul

After all the adrenaline rush today, I was so inspired to write. Just got in at 1pm since leaving the house at 6 a.m to join my Saturday running buddies. So my little princess was under the weather since Tuesday and instead of working out, I found myself eating hospital food and other junk all week. By Friday evening, I felt so nauseous from binge eating of junk and was worried I might also be going down with something – which I could not afford at that moment. So I took a shower and went off to bed early feeling sorry for myself. I woke up around 3a.m because I couldn’t sleep anymore. Shame that the country isn’t safe enough because I would have liked to have gone for an early morning run at that time. So instead, I decided to visit my weight loss support group page on Facebook – WEW. I realized I hadn’t caught up on the computer in a while as it is a different experience from when you use the phone to browse. It was good to see that so many people that were challenging themselves all over the world. By the time I read peoples’ stories for an hour, I was more than inspired to JUST DO IT- I guess that is the idea of the group in the first place.

Thinking of my busy next few hours, I decided to take a brief nap and then wake up few minutes before 6a.m. because that is the time our runners club meets to run. As per my usual fitness town crier duties I woke up and sent a ‘PING’ to my friends on BB and put up a personal message that read ‘Do your heart some good – no excuses because it’s Saturday.’ That annoys a lot of my friends because it’s too early on a Saturday morning. So I put on my sportswear and running shoes (I had decided to try out this new pair of Nike shoes because my ankle has been hurting for a while now, which my trainer attributes it to my old and rickety cross-trainers which I have had for years and was really addicted to) and headed out!

We got a new member at the runners club, another lady, who was quickly introduced before we separated the runners from the power walkers. Did I mention that power walking or brisk walking is another good form of cardio exercise for people who have medical conditions which would not enable them to run or people who are still too overweight to run? After all the energy I got from reading others’ stories, I told my running buddy that I wanted us to do 10km that morning. Being the true sport that she is, she said no issues although I had to warn her though that I had half an apple and a pineapple smoothie before coming so I was fully energized! So we put up on music and started running; she counted our steps using her Pedometer and I used Endomondo on my phone.

At exactly 1hr17mins50secs, the voice on Endomondo announced that we had done 10.3km and I personally burnt 802 calories and we were super excited! What this meant for us is that, we must take our running even more seriously. We have decided to up our game next week and push a little further. Before we know it, your baby runners Tee and Ester (that is my running buddy’s name) will be training for a 42km marathon somewhere in the world.

My next stop was at a friends’ fitness party somewhere in VI. I had 1hr to get there and I was feeling a bit faint. It is always important to fuel up when running. Luckily, I had few a grapes and some apples in the car so I simply munched on the grapes and an apple, which I needed for a sugar rush. I almost didn’t go but I thought since I have been thinking of having a fitness gig myself, it would be nice to go and see how these things are done. Besides I was yet to meet my buddy Uwa in person; we had only become acquainted over BB through this my weight loss journey. So it was a nice opportunity to do so.

with the very stars of the day- 59km in 11hrs 33mins………now thats huge

It was such a nice event I must say and most interestingly was the fact that I met women with like minds about healthy living. We compared notes as could be expected and had a fantastic 1hr or so of serious aerobics. Come and see sweat o!

And just when I thought my adrenaline level wouldn’t  go up anymore, I bumped into my friends who did a fitness walk from Ikeja-Shoprite to Ajah- yes you heard me right. I caught up with them around Dolphin estate and was so excited. Spun around quickly so I could at least take few pictures with them, you know, because I want to be associated with the winning team…lol. The walk took them 11hours 33 minutes for a distance of 59km. Now that’s an achievement! One of my friend’s sports watch read: 6,934calories burnt- that’s huge.

It was a day filled with several achievements; with we achieving our first personal best of 10.3km in 1hr17mins to my friend Uwa finally organizing her first fitness Parry to my very good friends Jumi, Bukky and Tayo who walked the walk for 11 and a half hours. You guys are my heroesJ.

Instead of complaining about your weight all the time, why not do something about it? You have the means to do it so JUST DO IT

This is such an inspirational story. I am glad to read about Nigerians living a healthy lifestyle. A lot of us really need to be educated about what we eat and stop consuming empty calories which only increase our waistlines. Our health care system cannot cope with all the health issues associated with being overweight oo..

Back to this story, I am also on my weighloss journey. I am presently working out from home with the help of aerobic exercise routines and it seems to be working. I am planning on joining a running group and that way i can learn to run. More power to you girl!!
